Glass vs. Metal Straws in 2020
In this article we are going to discuss the benefits of both these items and why we recommend one over the other. I also included at the end my personal experience and way to get creative when using reusable metal straws. Ultimately, you will have to choose which is the best solution for you or your business.
Needless to say, we can all come to the conclusion whether you end up choosing glass or metal it is still better than using plastic straws. Plastic straws are made up of polypropylene that is difficult to recycle and can also be toxic. My usual rule of thumb is if you can’t pronounce what something is made out of you probably don’t want it.
Thanks to National Geographic, they shed a lot of light as to why plastics are bad for the environment. They informed the public that 500 million straws are used every single day in the United States. When you think of the world as a whole, I can’t even begin to think about that math in my head. Thats why when you order a UseMe LIFE straw product we always toss in free stickers that read the famous quote “It’s only 1 straw”- said 8 billion people.
So now that the damage is done we need to make some changes and people are migrating slowly to change the products that they use. But, people need to have all the facts as to what change is going to be best for them!
Here are the facts about glass straws
- Easy to clean! Glass is transparent regardless if you get a colored one or not. Which makes it is very obvious if the straw is thoroughly cleaned or not.
- Heat conduction: Glass is usually heat resistant. This makes it more versatile of a product to use for both hot and cold beverage.
- Eco- friendly: Yes, because they are reusable however you may need to ask your local waste center to see if they will accept them.
Here are the facts about metal straws
- Durable! unlike glass, you do not have to worry about dropping your straw on a counter and having the possibility of it shattering. Stainless steel is a very durable material that can handle the roughhousing of everyday life.
- Easy to clean: Metal straws are dishwasher safe, which makes cleaning a straw as easy as cleaning a fork.
- Conductivity: Metal straws are only good for room temperature to cold beverages! So if you are someone that likes an ice coffee in the middle of winter, you won’t have a problem.
- Eco-friendly: Recyclable? YES because of they are made up of stainless steel you can recycle these.
So What’s the Verdict?
When it comes to the planet, both are great solutions to avoid using toxic plastic straws. However, metal is the clear winner for overall practicality. Unlike glass, this is dishwasher safe and durable if they fall on the counter or floor. If you own a resultant and were looking to go green, metal straws may be a better solution for you however you may want to have a couple glass straws on hand if someone orders a hot drink.
Be mindful that there are people in this world that do need straws to help them physically be able to drink. If a straw ban is coming near you please be prepared. If you do choose to go with the metal or the glass straw a highly recommend having silicone tips on hand.
For More Information: From my experience
When it comes to finding the right alternative for you, it’s best to look at all the options available. For me, I have purses in every size imaginable. I found, that I often forgot or couldn’t bring my metal straws based off of the bag I was using that day. In most cases when I was out at a restaurant, I would opt for no straw if they didn’t provide me a paper straw alternative. I know myself and if I am going out to dinner with friends or family I will always get a glass of water and a diet coke. The metal straws were the best choice for me for two reasons. First, I only use straws with cold beverages so the conduction was not an issue. Second, metal straws come in collapsible options. The collapsible straw solved my problem of which bag I was using that day. Ultimately, we need to find changes that are practical and what we can fully adapt to in everyday lives otherwise we are going to all fall back into the same habits we had before. The other plus to the collapsible metal straw is that it comes with a keychain. Let’s say, I didn’t want to use a purse that day and I wanted to just have my wallet in my back pocket and call it a day, I would toss my reusable metal straw on my keys! This was the perfect solution for me.
How To Get Creative With Straws:
We realize for a lot of people that change to switch to reusable straws is rather difficult for multiple reasons. One of them being that we never had to carry one around before so we need to develop a new habit with on average takes about 21 days, studies say. So we thought of a fun way to get creative with using reusable straws is to customize your own! Personalized metal straws are great for your friends or family that are not 100 percent onboard with the idea yet. you can get them a straw and holder with their name on and gift to them. I never met anybody that turned down a personalized gift before, have you?
Promotional items are another way to get people onboard when using sustainable products. When I use to work in the corporate world We got branded everything as employees, mostly freebie items. Why not make this one of them? If you have a summer intern group these items would be perfect. These products will not only make your employees happy and give you brand recognition but will make a huge impact on the planet!
If you own a restaurant, I am sure you are sick of hearing people complain about paper straws. They dissolve in my mouth and leave an after taste of paper. Let me also add that we are still using a product that is disposable. Wasn’t the entire point of eliminating plastic straws was that we would not create more waste that will end up in beaches, oceans, and landfills. For me, this is counterproductive! I recommend making the switch to our bulk reusable straw options. The best part about this is that you can have your logo on the straw which will make your restaurants mojito so instagram- worthy. Another thing, why not profit from these? Every time I go into Bubba Gump or the Hard Rock Cafe they are always trying to get me to buy a glass for memorabilia. Include a customized straw and make money! When you use the plastic straws that’s just money you are flushing down the toilet.
Another way you can get real creative with these products is with universities. It's no bout that the youth are the driving forces behind climate change and being cautious consumers. Provide them with items like this and they will remember that you didn’t just give them another pock socket or fidget spinner. Provide them with products that they will actually use and not just collect dust in a junk drawer or a landfill. Provide meaningful and thoughtful promotional items and I bet you they will go a long way.
